Adoption Process

Adoption Process

How does the adoption process work?

The first step is to meet with an adoption specialist so they can assist you in finding the best match for you. Browsing is always encouraged, however—either via website, facebook, petfinder, or visiting the adoption center. Our goal is to assist you in finding your best match for a lifelong companion.

When you arrive, we will direct you to PARL’s cats, small animals or dogs (depending on your preference.) We encourage you to spend time petting our cats and small animals, and meeting our dogs outside with an adoption counselor. Please ask questions -- we're here to help!

At our shelter our adoptable animals can change daily. If you don't find what you are looking for the first time, please come see us again! Chances are that we will have some new furry friends available for adoption, and one of them might be purr-fect for you!

We try to keep an open and easy process for our adopters. Although we do not require documentation of landlord approval; we do recommend double checking with your landlord – or homeowner’s insurance – about any possible restrictions they may have. It is also a good idea to make sure everyone in your family is on the same page about what they are looking for in your next pet!

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • Does your new pet need to get along with kids, cats, or other dogs (in the home, or around town..)?
  • How much time do you have to play with/exercise and train your new pet?
  • How much time will your pet spend home alone?
  • What is your (and your neighbor’s) tolerance for noise, such as barking?
  • Does your new pet need to live happily in a busy, active household or with children or older adults?
  • What is your tolerance level for minor destruction, such as chewing, scratching furniture, knocking items off shelves, and/or housetraining accidents?

Having the answers to these types of questions can help us help you find your perfect match!

    Couple other helpful suggestions...

We encourage meet & greets for all! It’s a good idea for all family members and roommates that will be living with your new pet to come to the shelter.

Looking for a companion for your dog? Let’s arrange a meet & greet for your dog as well! What else? Well, you need to be at least 18 years old and have photo identification. Pretty simple!

Found your purr-fect match? Here’s what happens next…

Get to Know Each Other – Once you find a pet that you are considering to adopt, a staff member will discuss the pet’s history and background, tell you a little about its personality and then give you a chance to spend some time together.

It’s time for us to get to know you a little better! - A staff member will have a conversation with you so we can help you find the perfect match.

Making it Official! - Confident you made the right choice? We will process your adoption paperwork and you will get an adoption packet that includes training tips, records of the pet's history and vaccinations, and other helpful paperwork. In most cases, you can take your new pet home with you the same day you come in.

Congratulations on your decision to adopt a new best friend! We hope you find the perfect companion you are looking for.

All of our dogs and cats are fed Hill's Science Diet food. We are proud to be a partner with them and are able to feed our shelter animals a high quality, consistent diet. In addition, Hill's also donates a coupon with every cat and dog adoption.
